I saw one of Yola’s large scale collages pasted on the side of the Hackney Bureau today. I really like her style, a little nod to the baroque with everyday people in epic scenes and some religious iconography. There’s also a Conor Harrington piece on the gable next to the cafe, you can see a little bit of it below. Hopefully be seeing lots more new stuff since my move to London.
Collage
Udo Rein
Mixed media work from German Artist and film maker Udo Rein. Udo Rein works with photography and collage influenced by the work of Robert Rauschenberg, Ray Johnson, Richard Hamilton and Mimmo Rotella.
Sonny Kay
Mad Photoshop skills from LA based visual artist and musician Sonny Kay. These are all examples of the Album Art he’s been doing over the years. Sonny Kay also did the art work for ‘Street Meat’ by Dublin based band No Spill Blood (that one’s at the bottom of the end of this post). Shed loads more mind bending stuff on his site below.
Matthew Cusick
Map collages from New York based artist Matthew Cusick. Some of these are on show at ‘The Mind is in it’s Own Place’ exhibition at Pavel Zoubok Galley in New York. I like the idea of these excessively intricate works using thousands of sections of maps rearranged to depict reclining nudes, waves and landscapes. I guess you could say there’s some political undertones of colonisation, war, and foreign culture here but they look great even if you don’t think about all that stuff.
Michael H Rohde – From Below
Gravity defying photography from German Artist Michael H Rohde. Each image is made of several photographs meticulously cut and pasted together to create the illusion of being viewed through a glass floor.
Leslie Ann O’Dell
Beautiful layered and monochrome photography from Leslie Ann O’Dell. Leslie doesn’t give away much about herself or her process but you can follow her work on facebook or on her site below. Leslie Ann O’Dell’s prints are available from etsy.com
Szymon Roginski
Beautiful fragmented photography from Szymon Roginski. This project was put together for Polish Fashion Designer Ania Kuczynska. Influenced by the Cublist who’s work attempted to break the two dimensions of painting. The photographs were built into hundreds of hand made solid shapes and rearranged to create these images. You should check out the rest of Szymon Roginski’s work on his site below, he’s got some amazing images from his travels in America and Asia.
Orlagh Murphy
I spotted Orlagh Murphy’s work on Facebook and was instantly impressed. I love her use of clean lines, subtle application of colour and overlaying images. Orlagh Murphy is an illustrator and designer from Dublin and is currently based in the UK while she completes an MA in illustration at UCF. Some of her prints are available through Society6.com and tote bags on Envelope.eu. Find more about Orlagh Murphy’s working process and influences on her blog here.
David Mach
Meticulously constructed matchstick and coat hanger sculptures from Scottish Artist David Mach. David was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1988 and is currently exhibiting work at the Galway Arts Festival entitled ‘Precious Light’. His work is made of everyday “non objects” taking and turning them into something inspiring; while tackling the subjects of religion and modern culture.
David accidentally discovered the performance power of his matchstick sculpture when a collector set one alight while having it cleaned. The resulting shared remains were much more interesting after the blaze. You can find his amazing collage work and more of his sculptures on his site below. David Mach’s exhibition continues at the Galway Arts Festival until the 19th of July.
